Music: Apostolos Kaldaras
First version: Yioryos Dalaras
Smyrna*, mother dear, is burning, and so is all that made up our lives
Our pain can not be told, our grief can not be written down.
Romiosyni, romiosyni, there is no rest for you
one year you live in peace, and thirty in the fire
Smyrna*, mother dear, is burning, our dreams are done.
On the ships, if one takes hold, even the "friends" hit him.
Romiosyni, romiosyni, there is no rest for you
one year you live in peace, and thirty in the fire

The "friends" are the so-called "Great Powers" who had ships in Smyrna harbour, watching the drama but beating off (most of) the people who tried to escape swimming - there were too many...
* Romiosyni: the name covers all the Greeks (whether they live inside the Greek state or not) and it includes their fate, their destiny, not just the individuals. | Geeske © 01-03-2006 @ 02:35 |
