Σηκώνοντας στους ώμους του το έπαθλο του Μαραθωνίου
ο ωραίος νεκρός κατεβαίνει στον Άδη,
'κει που οι αιώνιοι Έλληνες τον καρτερούν. Αλλ’ όμως
τους πάει μισό τ’ άγγελμα:
ΝΕΝΙΚΗ-
άλλοι σας φέρνουν πίσω μου το ΝΕΝΙΚΗΚΑΜΕΝ.
Εγώ δεν ήτανε να `ρθω τόσο ενωρίς, εμένα,
στων Πλαταιών τη χώρα και του Μαραθώνα,
με σκοτώσανε οι Πέρσες.
