Summer Festival

Sticky, cotton candy on lips,
popcorn in mouth--
the extra butter remains on the fingers --
and the band sings:
"I'm a believer."

Who will win the teddy?

Children's feet stomp,
their little bodies swing and sway,
their faces filled with laughter.

Balloons in the air float;
a couple kisses;
a group of adults laugh at a certain hysterical joke
while the old man covers his ears and walks away
as the band continues to play
and rhythm fills the air.

I sit here on the bench,
observing,
trying to absorb it all,
transporting my mind to how it once was....

and the band continues to sing:
"I'm a believer."
