The Cape

From some magical time and unknown space did this travel
Time and use its extraordinary powers have yet to unravel.
A cape made of the finest velvet sateen
Lined with the deepest purple satin my eyes have ever seen.
Its sheer length and incredible weight its mysteries enhance
To wear this cape each girl fervently prays to have the chance.

I have seen the changes as they took place
The gifts of confidence, power, aloofness and grace.
A transformation – not just an illusion – in my mind
The cape and the actor in another realm did bind.
No longer a silly giggling schoolgirl in her early teens
Fate – she has now become – controlling and commanding all scenes.

Fate can be cruel they say – she can also be kind
In her enshrouded form many other attributes will you find.
A temptress. An oracle. A soothsayer. A friend.
She is there in the beginning and she is there at the very end.
Cloaked in her midnight cape she is an awesome sight to behold
As she turns with a sweep of her cap she is ever so bold.

Every movement, every gesture, every word and look
A magical spell was woven and our breathes she took.
The cape or the girl – which is to blame?
Two different beings yet all at once – they are one and the same.
Fate or narrator – who is cloaked in this cape?
What wondrous magic this cloth has which on her does drape.

The time shall come soon after the final bow is made
This wondrous cloak to remove and final homage is paid.
To place it again in its nest of tissue to be stored
The coveted cape that is so revered and adored.
Wistfully once again for the novices to wait and pray
That they might be chosen the role of Fate to finally play.
