Three Franks captured
Giangos Noulas in an ambush,
for three days they tortured him,
for four days they broke him down
and all Sunday through Monday
and Tuesday too, they were demanding:
Submit to the valour of the Franks
to get yourself land and wealth
Submit, submit, they kept telling him, you will get yourself high rank, submit. But he does not submit, for he is a freedom fighter.
I do not submit to foreigners,
and to Franks I pay no homage

and grandson to Skender Bey
I am the tyrant's killer,
the sword of the enslaved people,
the voice of the unjustly oppressed,
the friend of the betrayed.

in the winter of an armatolos,
the sun in the dead of the winter
of the twentieth century
| | | | Translator's notes: Skender Bay is a national hero of Albania, 15th century, renowned for fighting against the Turks. Kleftis is usually a thief, but also the name given to freedom fighters during the Turkish rule. Armatolos is the title of functionaries assigned by the Turks to keep an area safe and quiet - in short, fight the kleftes.
