Wish I were Alexander the Great - 2346 Αναγνώσεις

Lyrics: Sotia Tsotou
Music: Stavros Kouyioumtzis
First version: Yioryos Dalaras

Wish I were Alexander,
and you were my Siren *,
so you could wear on your feet
little dear, my crown..

But I am a poor and humble
Alexander of this day.
They are calling me Aleko,
and do not take note of me.

Wish I were destroying tall castles,
sword in hand,
to cover you in riches,
to cover your shining, my dear star.

But I am a poor and humble
Alexander of this day.
They are calling me Aleko,
and do not take note of me.

 * Translator's note: this "γοργόνα" ("gorgóna") has nothing to do with the "Gorgons" of classical mythology, who were frightful sea-monsters (Medusa is the best-known of them). This one here is a siren, the fairy-tale kind, half woman half fish. In Greek popular tradition, Alexander the Great had a sister who was a siren. She would stop ships and ask "Alexander, the king, does he live?" - if the crew answered "he lives and rules!" she'd let them go safe, if not she sent them to the bottom.
