The Melody of Death
(Several days later... Night.
The lights go on, while the Melody continues, a Solo Organ.
Various guests to the Music Evening are in the drawing room.
Eva sits at the Organ. She continues playing the Melody.
Opposite her, to the side, a group of children, boys and girls aged between ten and twelve, are standing. They are all dressed in white clothing.
The guests, some standing, others seated, are directly opposite.
After the introduction of the “Melody of Death” Solo Organ, the small children’s choir in accompaniment to the Organ begins to sing the “Hymn of Death.”)
Oh, Death! Oh, Death!
The Beginning and End of Life!
All mortals quake in fear of you.
Spirits embodied
in perishable bodies.
Eternal the Cycle of Life and of Death!
Darkness. Light. Light and Darkness One!
Death, source of Life
for all.
In This Terrible Cycle,
of the Great Law of the Universe,
all obey!
Time, the Great Slavedriver,
creates Death from Life.
Life from Death!
Oh, Death! Oh, Death!
The Beginning and End of Life!
Oh, Death! Oh, Death!
Of Life the Beginning and the End!!!
(As soon as “The Melody of Death” ends, the guests applaud with great enthusiasm. Exclamations of admiration are heard from everyone.)
Voices: Well done!... Well done!... Wonderful!... Stunning!... A dream!... Marvellous!... Unique!... Fantastic!... Well done!... Well done!... Well done!...
