Those Voices!!!...
The Bowels of the Earth
(The Wailing and Lamentation continue.
Hausen puts his hands over his ears so as not to hear the voices.
Looking behind him into the Tunnel with a pained expression, he starts to speak aloud.)
(Hausen)
Oh... Oh... Oh...
Those Voices!!!...
Of those who suffer!...
There!...
In the Nether Regions!...
In the Fires!... In the Sulphur!...
(At that same moment, the Entity presses Eva to go into the Tunnel beside the Dock, with a steady peremptory gesture. Eva does not want to go into it.)
Oh...
If only they could be dumb!...
Each one by himself!...
If they could shout inside themselves!...
If only the horror were... Silent!!!...
...If only one could not hear... the scream of the other!...
The pain would be less!...
And the tears of the many... would not drown... each one!!!...
(Hausen turns towards the Cavern.
He sees Eva not wanting to enter the left-hand side Tunnel opposite while the Entity insists with peremptory gestures.
The Wailing and Lamentation, together with the sounds of fire, continue.
Eva enters the Tunnel and vanishes into it.
The Wailing and Lamentation continue.
Hausen, as if hypnotized, is drawn by the Tunnel. He attempts to resist, but an invisible force pulls him.
A sudden explosion of anguish overwhelms him...)
(Hausen)
That Creature!...
...Who Vanished!...
...What force!...
...She has... ...inside her!...
...And it draws me...
...To her!...
...I want,... ...together with her!...
...To...
(He feels the Tunnel drawing him in.)
...Vanish!...
...Into...
...The Fires!...
...Into...
...The Fires!...
...Into...
...The Fires!...
(He goes across the mouth of the Tunnel.)
...And then... ...And then...
(Hausen enters the Tunnel and vanishes into it.)
Into the Darkness!... Into the Darkness!!... Into the Darkness!!!...
The Cavern begins to sway and the lighting begins to flicker.
Smoke emerges from the Tunnels,
as the Entities, awed, take up positions against the Cavern walls.
Soon, the sounds die down as the lighting in the Cavern lowers.
Absolute Darkness envelopes the Cavern.)
