Ένα παλληκάρι ήτανε μια φορά,
που αγάπαγε με πάθος μια όμορφη κυρά.
Μια μέρα, όπως έπαιρνε τα λάγνα της φιλιά,
«ζήτα μου οτιδήποτε» τής λέει τρυφερά.
«Αν μ’ αγαπάς» τού είπε, με νάζι και καημό,
«την καρδιά της μάνας σου εγώ επιθυμώ»
Έτσι λοιπόν ξεκίνησε, να πάει στο πατρικό του,
ποτέ του αυτός δεν πάτησε τον όρκο το δικό του.
«Δώσε μου μάνα την καρδιά, στα πόδια της ν’ αφήσω»
«Αν είναι γιε μου για καλό, εγώ στηνε χαρίζω»
Κι έτσι της πήρε την καρδιά και χάθηκε στο δρόμο,
μα σε μια πέτρα σκόνταψε και δάκρυσε απ’ τον πόνο.
Γυμνή η καρδιά τού μίλησε, προτού να ξεψυχήσει:
«Χτύπησες μήπως γιόκα μου, ψηλό μου κυπαρίσσι;»
Με ματωμένα χέρια φτάνει στο σπιτικό της,
«να η καρδιά που γύρευες» και την αφήνει εμπρός της.
Μα αυτή καν δεν τον κοίταξε κι άρχισε να γελάει,
«μήπως θα `ταν καλύτερο να μού τη φέρεις Μάη...»

There was a palikari once upon a time
who passionately loved a beautiful lady
One day, as he was tasting her fiery kisses
"Ask me anything" he says to her, tenderly
"If you love" she said, affecting grief,
"the heart of your mother, that's what I wish for"
And so he set out to go to his father's house
that one, he never took back his given word.
"Give me, mother dear, your heart, to leave at her feet"
"If it's in a good cause, my dear son, I shall give it to you"
And so he took her heart and got lost on the way
and stumbled on a stone and cried for pain.
"My dear little son, did you hurt yourself, my tall cypress tree?"
the naked heart said this to him, and then it gave the ghost.
With blood on his hands he reached her house
"here is the heart you wanted" and leaves it before her.
But she doesn't even look at him and she starts to laugh
"maybe it would be better if you brought it to me in May..."
