Ήτανε λέει μια φορά, λευκή σαν το αλάτι
και ζούσε στα φανταχτερά, νεράιδα σε παλάτι.
Και κάπου εκεί στην αγορά, με κάμα στο θηκάρι,
αυτός με μάτια φλογερά, το πρώτο παληκάρι.
Ψηλά πετούσε ένας αητός, που μέτραγε τον ίσκιο,
όταν φιλί τής δίνει αυτός, στα χείλη από ιβίσκο.
Τον είδαν όμως τα θεριά, ψηλά από τα κάστρα,
και τρύπησαν με σαϊτιά τα ρούχα του τα άσπρα.
Ήτανε λέει μια φορά, ωχρή σαν το χρυσάφι,
νεράιδα μέσα στα νερά, στου ποταμού τα βάθη.
Και κάπου εκεί στον ουρανό, μ’ ένα φιλί στο βιός του,
αυτός σαν άστρο φωτεινό, τής χάριζε το φως του.

Once upon a time there was, they say, white like salt
and she lived in an imaginary world, a fairy in a palace.
And somewhere nearby in the marketplace, with a broad knife in his sheath
the one with eyes like flames, the first pallikari.*
High up there flew an eagle, who measured the shadows,
when he gave her a kiss, on her hibiscus lips.
They saw him, however, the beasts, from high above the castles
and pierced with arrows his white clothing.
Once upon a time there was, they say, of an ochre color like gold
a fairy in the waters, in the deeps of the river.
And somewhere there in the sky, with a kiss on his life
he like a star full of light gave his light to her.
