Persefone is Demeter's daughter, Spring daughter of the Earth. She's the one who was seduced into eating the King of Death's pomegranate seeds, and has to live underground for half the year, coming up at winter's end bringing new life - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persephone etc.
