| | Lyrics: Kostas Tripolitis
Music: Thanos Mikroutsikos
First version: Yioryos Dalaras
He rang my bell in the small hours: Beelzebub
the devil the poor little devil * - and utterly hopeless
- won't you see what you can do,
because I am down and out and suffering from withdrawal*
those Up There have degraded me to the scullery*,
I am looking for a nice little nest egg*
No way to trust civilised people anymore
even the Damned in Hell are being legally evicted*
Oh dear poor little devil
the higher bosses of Hell
have dug a hole for you... *
He fell into the living room, under the table*, mister Vade Retro*
miserable o SO miserable that I was ashamed even of watching:
- I no longer command any prestige or respect
even though I was once wooing Eve
even the most church-going don't fear me anymore
and see me as cheap* whisky
No way to trust the law of the market* anymore
see how they've trimmed my fairy tale short *
Oh dear poor little devil
the higher bosses of Hell
have dug a hole for you...
He was shaking inside his cloak, ready to die, Beelzebub,
unhappy o SO unhappy but he was keeping cool *
- Do you know anyone who has vices *
I'm offering my organs for service
Drop a line to your mates
come on and let's sell out the Firm*
And if you know any dirty old man see what he will offer
to take on a poor devil out of charity
Oh dear poor little devil
the higher bosses of Hell
have dug a hole for you...
| | | Sorry, I've splurged a bit on footnotes in this one - G.
διάολο : translated throughout by 'devil' or 'poor devil': as sad come-down for Satan The Devil (as you will see)
χαρμάνης : any addicted person, but especially when they miss their poison - most often used simply for tobacco smokers spoiling for a cigarette.
στη λάντζα : to the scullery = go wash dishes!
καβάτζα : any little bit of something put away against hard times - in English it's called a nest egg, in Dutch and French "an apple against the thirst"
νομίμως έξωση : 'legally evicted' is the literal translation, it means exactly that: someone being turned out of their house by the cops (for example for non-payment of the rent, but it could also be because "someone" don't like them)
σου σκάψανε το λάκκο... : this refers to digging a hole for someone else and then falling into it oneself - but also of course to Hell, which is the deepest of all holes (see Dante - much more graphic than the bible).
τάβλα : this single word means "so drunk as to have rolled under the table" - what a wonderful language Greek is...
Εξαποδώ : literally "out of here" - referring to the well-known quote "vade retro Satanas".
μπόμπα : another of those words where the barbarian really really needs Babiniotis - except a bomb (the kind that explodes, yes) this word also means very bed very cheap alcoholic drink.
κουλ : = cool (transcribed, not translated)
βίτσια : vices, as in sex (use your imagination - or not of course).
τα όργανα δίνω για σερβίτσια : "I am offering my organs (sexual organs) for service (it's the same word as in Greek but I'm not sure that in Greek it's also used, the way it is in English, to describe "the bull is brought to service the cow", that is, get her pregnant. Anyhow the services hinted at here seem to be of a homosexual kind (the κολλητούς and below the Ακόλαστο are all in the masculine form).
Φίρμα : the Firm, or Trade mark - he's proposing to put Hell and/or sin and/or evil up for sale.
Ακόλαστο : a fairly general (and not very polite, but not extremely rude) designation for a person of perverted sexual habits - the 'old' in the translation 'dirty old man' is not to be taken litteraly. | Geeske © 18-12-2004 @ 18:55 |
