Ylykeria

On Saturday or Sunday
this week
I shall do something which for a long time
I've had coming to me

I shall take my little boat
whatever the weather may be
and I'll set out across the sea
towards Karampournou *

It hides a pain, it hides a pain
such a journey into the past times
when all I had to work with were two eyes
that were drinking in the sunset, slowly
and elsewhere, over the tools in the shop-window
waiting endlessly, greedily.

The city *, from there, from that far off,
is not so very grey
and the Chortiatis * looks
as if it were sky-blue

The horizon, from there, far off,
stops being a limitation
and they become one
the sky and the sea

Let me see all the neighbourhoods
where I knocked about as a kid
Let me remember all that was lovely
and went in vain

Freshly white-washed
Mpairi * among the trees
and no cars among
the lemonadika.

It hides a pain, it hides a pain
such a journey into the past times
when all I had to work with were two eyes
that were drinking in the sunset, slowly
and elsewhere, over the tools in the shop-window
waiting endlessly, greedily.

 Translator's notes:
* All the * are on the map of Thessaloniki, "the city" meant in the song, Papazoglou's home town. In case you hadn't noticed yet, the Thessalonokioi are unusually fierce in their love for their city (not to mention contagious).
Karampournou or Karampournaki, or "akri Mikro Emvolo", is the eastern point of the crescent-shape of the city, that is, the Kalamaria end, the cape you see sticking out into the sea behind the Megaro if you look at it from, say, the White Tower.
The Chortiatis is the mountain ridge that rises behind the city, supporting, sheltering, looming... The villages up the mountain flanks are, each in its own way, part of the city too. You may have heard of Panorama, if only because of those dangerous triangular pastries... Chortiatis is about 1000 m high, and steep in proportion, as its top is only about 10 km from the sea, of which at least half is a coastal flat only barely above sea-level. The mountain is extremely narrow, just a fine ridge, it goes down on the other side just as steeply towards the twin lakes of Koronia and Volvi. There is a fairly good road up, because there are a lot of telecom antenna's on it. And the view is more than worth the climb, especially on a clear day.
Mpairi is an old name (of Turkish origin) for the Ano Poli, the steep part of town, up the hill, with the tiny houses and the streets that become stairs every now and then.
