We have often heard how there's no point in discrediting the music produced nowadays sincevery generation dislikes the younger generation's music". It is suggested then that there is continuity in the sense that every parent has always hated their childrens' music but in reality every generation produces worthwhile, meaningful music.
This "continuity" argument is unjustified because of a very simple truth: Indeed, your grandparents loathed your parents' music because it was too explicit, loud and rebellious, the same reason that your parents hate yours; but here's the difference: you and your parents are still frequently listening to jolly, noisy classic 40 year old songs of long dead bearded men pulling strings on guitars now resting in some museum hall, but you never listen to that pop song released just 1 year ago because "no, that's old and uncool, and the clubs never put it on anymore".
Songs today are about the radio stations shoving them down your throat again and again, telling you "it's a hit" , although it was they promoted them in the first place, and then poof! they recycle it for another "hit", to feed the pockets of middle aged men in suits willingly detached from the reality of the situation, and the naive minds of adolescents craving for some random noise and a tirelessly repeating chorus about how enjoyable alcohol is or how thrilling a one night stand would be. That's not how it was in the 60's. Ask your dad.
How the older generations view new music hasn't changed, but the industry, and our standards, have. Δημοσίευση στο stixoi.info: 22-06-2012 | |
