Mothers and Daughters (part Iii - last part)

"All she does is lie on the couch and cough."

"Does she have a fever?"

"Yes, doctor."

"Bring her in, in an hour. I want to see her.”

Who says that children are difficult when they are sick? Caterina is difficult when she is healthy, and an angel when she is sick. I brought her back from the doctor whose diagnosis was: a bad case of the flu.

"Don't worry," he told me, "she will be just fine in a few days. Just make sure she takes her medicine and call me tomorrow." It's easy for him to tell me not to worry. He doesn't have to stay home and watch his child lie on the couch all day, coughing constantly. I sit next to her and kiss her forehead. She barely smiles, not her "watch out" smile but her "I really don't care about anything" smile.

"Are you O.K. princess?"" she nods to answer my stupid question. "I love you," I continue.

"Wuwu," she whispers. The house seems so silent.

"Time for your medicine."

"Nooo," she says softly, almost inaudibly. Pretending I don't hear her, I walk to the kitchen, pour a teaspoon of that disgusting cough syrup into the spoon, and walk back to her. She is too weak to fight me, so she opens her mouth. That night and for three nights later, she falls asleep as soon as I put her in her crib. The fourth night she's up to her old tricks again; Finally, some noise in the house! I continue being "firm" with her (hoping that my mother is right) and at the same time, enjoying our little battles.

After twenty-three years of firmness, I realize that my mother is wrong. I can hold my breath for all eternity and my daughter will not change. She is still a schemer, unyielding, and an academy award candidate for her tears. She still smiles her "watch out" smile and she is still the most adorable child in the world. Yes, I'm biased. I'm allowed.
