| | | | The song was written in 1936, when a string of former Greek Prime Ministers passed away, and while the country was generally in a state of political turmoil with governments succeeding one another rapidly during the dying days of the Second Hellenic Republic.
Kondylis refers to Georgios Kondylis, a retired General, twice Prime Minister, former Regent and multiple-times Minister, working with many (then) prominent parties of the time such as the Liberal Party and People's Party.
Venizelos refers to Eleftherios Venizelos, the most prominent Greek statesman of the 20th century, who served as Prime Minister repeatedly between 1910 and 1933. He was the leader and founder of the Greek Liberal Party and the Venizelos political dynasty, and is still a highly revered (but also controversial) figure in Greek politics. His death in 1936 came after the demise and rather inglorious end of his political career following a string of failed coups that undermined the very Republic he and his Party had created.
Demertzis (also spelled Demerdjis) refers to Konstantinos Demertzis, a Greek academic and statesman, who served as Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party after the death of Eleftherios Venizelos.
"To end it all" in the fourth lyric of the first stanza is a pun on multiple Venizelist/Liberal songs claiming their leaders will bring the Megali Idea to its final fruition, as well as the claims and hopes of many politicians of the time that Demertzis would bring an end to the political crisis that gripped Greece before his sudden death. |  Spirtzis © 29-01-2019 @ 04:50 |
