Ήταν κάποτε δυο φίλοι στο μικρό μας το νησί
δυόσμος με το καρυοφύλλι, τσάμπουρο με το κρασί.
Βγαίνανε μαζί σεργιάνι πριν αλλάξουν οι καιροί
και στην εκκλησιά του Αϊ Γιάννη άναβαν μαζί κερί.
Έλαμπε το καλοκαίρι, ήμουνα κι εγώ παιδί,
τέτοιο αγαπημένο ταίρι στη ζωή δεν είχα δει.
Τους εκοίταζαν οι γλάροι τους εκοίταζα κι εγώ,
σαν θαλασσινό φεγγάρι πάνω από την Αμοργό.
Κάποτε έφερε τ’ αγέρι μια γοργόνα από τη Τζια
τρυφερή σαν περιστέρι, λυγερή σαν νερατζιά.
Με τα φωτεινά της μάτια στο γιαλό κάθε βραδιά
έκανε εκατό κομμάτια τη φτωχή τους την καρδιά.
Είχε ο κόσμος πια μαυρίσει κι από κείνο τον καιρό
έγινε η ψυχή τους βρύση με φαρμακερό νερό.
Πήρε ο ένας το μαχαίρι, πήρε ο άλλος το σπαθί
και τ’ αγαπημένο ταίρι το `χε η μοίρα να χαθεί.

Once, there were two friends on our little island,
like mint with clove, grape with wine.
They would go out together, before the times changed,
and lit a candle together in the Church of St John.
In the glow of the summer - and I was a young boy then -
such strong friendship I had never seen in my life.
The seagulls were looking at them, and I looked at them too,
like a sea moon above Amorgos.
One day, like a wind, a beautiful maiden from Kea came,
tender as a dove, supple as a sweet lemon.
With flashes of her bright eyes in the evenings on the seashore,
she tore their poor hearts into a hundred pieces.
The world became dark ever since that time;
their souls were like fountains of poisonous water.
One took out a sword and the other a sabre,
And the fate of the loving friends was gone.
| | | | Damon and Findias were two legendary friends in mythology, willing to give their lives for one another.
